    Groundhog Day Celebration

Happy Groundhog day!   This year is the first time we are attempting to ‘celebrate’ Groundhog day. So here we go! To start with, we made Coco Krispy Groundhogs! It’s just the standard Rice Krispy Treat recipe only we swapped out Rice Krispies for Coco Krispies so that our groundhogs would be brown. Here’s the recipe: —————————————— INGREDIENTS 3 tablespoons butter 1 package (10 oz., about 40) Marshmallows OR 4 cups Miniature Marshmallows 6 cups Coco Krispy Rice cereal DIRECTIONS 1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.  2.…

    Superbowl Party!

So, here’s an embarrassing confession. Up until a year or so ago, I had NO idea that people celebrate Superbowl Sunday!  I have made it my mission to celebrate every moment, so to discover a new ‘holiday’ was a jackpot for me! Last year was our first Superbowl Party. All we knew was that guacamole was the official snack of the Superbowl, so we bought guacamole and seven layer dip and called it a day. This year I amped it up a little bit. I decorated!  I imagine that the way I decorated is unusual and odd to most –…

Holiday Home Tour 2014 – Better Late than never!

As I mentioned in a previous post, home renovations and stressful events had delayed the start of our holiday decorating until mid-to-late December. We’ve got our Evie Bird home now after a nearly 4 month hospital stay. Though most people have taken down their Christmas decorations by now, we’ve extended the season a bit so that she can enjoy that home-for-the-holidays feel a bit before we move on to the next holiday. So, though it’s late for a holiday home tour, we’re on our own holiday schedule this year and it’s still Christmas at our house! With the snow coming down for Winter Storm…

Last Minute Christmas Decorating and a Flooring Update!

I promised frequent updates on the hardwood flooring restoration project, but unfortunately there have been no updates to report.  Due to some big-time stressful life events, we decided it would be best for all of us to put this project on hold and avoid adding to our stress. We had planned on finishing this project before Thanksgiving, and it is now rapidly approaching Christmas. Anyone who knows me knows, I LOVE decorating for Christmas. I look forward to it all year – I am always trying to extend the season by starting earlier and leaving the decorations up a little longer than…

Dining Room Flooring in Progress Before and After DIY Renovation Project

After 27 years, I think it is safe to say that we got our money’s worth out of our 80’s linoleum floor. I have been mentally removing it for at least a decade now and cropping it out of pictures ever since I started this blog.   I finally tackled this DIY (Do It Yourself) project armed with only 2 screw drivers, a pry bar, a box cutter/razor and locking pliers.  Should be easy, right?  Just pop up the old sub-floor and reveal the gorgeous hard wood below.  As you can see in the first picture at the top, removing…

Cheap Plastic Tablecloths into Lovely Festive Decor!

Using cheap plastic tablecloths in unconventional ways to make a bold decorative statement with color indoors or out! They look so good in the package with their bright colors that will surely brighten up your party table, but then you unfold them and they are so thin you can see right through them, and they are covered with unsightly fold lines — a party table nightmare! But, there are some really great ways to use these table cloths to really make a bright bold party statement on a tight budget! The following is not so much a tutorial as it is a…

A Murder of Crows, Unkindness of Ravens

Nevermore! One of my favorite natural Autumn occurrences is when flocks of black birds flying south for the winter make a stop at our house. It’s always just a little bit scary, but exciting! While they are visiting,  the trees are alive with movement. The chatter of the hundreds of birds is like no other sound I have ever heard – it surrounds you. They often swoop down in large numbers – in perfect  synchronization and cover the ground as they peck at the grass, covering it like a black carpet – swooping up and down from the trees in…

    Orange Twinkle Lights.

Orange Twinkle Lights! I love Autumn. I love crisp Autumn days and chilly Autumn nights. With autumn comes shorter days and longer nights and an intense urge to cuddle and hibernate. As the days get shorter I like to brighten up the house with orange twinkle lights to make the house feel cozy and bright. I cannot get enough of that warm glow. It totally changes the feel of the house even with no other decorations. To really get the most out of theses lights, I like to place them around lots of shiny and reflective items like glass and…

Decorating for Autumn with Fall Foliage.

Happy October!! Today is the first day of October, and my Autumn decorating has officially begun. Though the leaves outside have only just barely started showing a hint of color change, inside the house our fall foliage is at its peak! Nothing says Autumn like brightly colored fall leaves. Until I find a way to preserve real fall foliage at its peak color, my collection of silk fall leaves will have to do! Over the years I have collected quite a pile them in the form of leafy garlands, leafy branches and loose leaves. These leaves transform the house into…
